Before deciding to move forward with the New York expansion, the company had considered growing jobs, over 300 in new video and post production positions, in its existing Los Angeles production facility. VICE also will retain over 400 existing jobs and invest $20 million to equip and renovate its new headquarters. To encourage VICE to significantly invest in and expand its headquarters in Brooklyn, ESD has offered the company $6.5 million in performance-based Excelsior Jobs Program Tax Credits, which are tied directly to the creation of a projected 525 new jobs over a five year period. “Brooklyn is our home and we're already hard at work developing a space-age utopia that will give today's creative visionaries a place to produce astonishing stories and leave their indelible thumbprint on the annals of history,” a VICE Media spokesperson said. The company has utilized its Williamsburg location as the headquarters for its 36 foreign bureaus and for a large majority of its post-production and editing work for its on-line channels, as well as for its show on HBO. And students should be fluent in digital technologies, social media, and actively creating original video content. Students from underrepresented communities are encouraged to apply. The Center will also organize three On Location events for the fellows to serve as an introduction to the NYC media landscape.Īpplicants must be a junior, denior or graduate student be a full‐time student who will not graduate prior to April 15 of the application year and demonstrate interest in journalism. Fellows will also have access to VICE’s state of the art edit suites, production studios and will be encouraged to create and present their own work for review at the end of the program. While at VICE, fellows will receive individual instruction and guidance from award‐ winning journalists, producers, and editors. Participants in the program will intern at the VICE offices in Brooklyn for eight weeks during the summer and will also have opportunities to engage with other media organizations, arranged by the Center for Communication. VICE Media and the Center for Communication are launching a fellowship program, open to students across the country, that will place two journalism students from underrepresented communities at VICE.
